Essays/Services offered

CULTIVE is a versatile laboratory that offers facilities, equipment and specialized personnel to carry out research work associated with the cultivation of organisms. Its main function consists of managing the maintenance of the infrastructure, developing those specific techniques required by users, and providing scientific-technical advice. And, in addition, it collaborates in teaching and scientific dissemination activities.

Associated with the use of different types of infrastructure or equipment, it includes:

  • Management and control of the environmental conditions required by users
  • Maintenance of facilities and equipment.
  • Cleaning and sterilization of facilities and equipment
  • Provide users with temperature and relative humidity data, through data loggers and climate probes.
  • Monitoring, supervision and maintenance of the experiments that are developed.
  • Application of phytosanitary treatments to control pests, and required fertilizers.
  • Weed control and fencing maintenance to exclude herbivores.
  • Supply of basic consumables.
  • Purchasing management. The service provides and manages the acquisition of consumable materials (substrates, containers), as well as the equipment necessary for their handling.
  • Scientific-technical advice for the design and assembly of experiments.
  • Additional services: Direct participation in experimentation and/or carrying out special assemblies (included in the rates).

The organism cultivation laboratory (CULTIVE) provides service to both the university itself and external institutions (public and private).

FACILITIES

Greenhouse

Large programmable heated greenhouse, which has been recently renovated and improved. It has a size of 240 m2, with a cultivation area of 120m2. It allows controlling temperature, radiation and irrigation conditions for experimentation throughout the year. Air conditioning systems using thermal screens, zenith windows, wind turbines, evapo-transpirators and automated irrigation with micro-sprinklers by individualized sectors. Photoperiod using height-adjustable LED luminaires.

Acclimatization Zones

Installation for outdoor experiments, in more natural conditions, of 2500 m2. It is divided into sections with different characteristics:

  • Area with the possibility of shading with sprinkler irrigation, automated by sectors.
  • Terraces for cultivation in soil or in containers, with drip irrigation installation.
  • Unheated tunnel greenhouse, with micro-sprinkler irrigation.
  • Versatile growing areas. They are lands without permanent installations, with drainage and geotextile. Different experiments and temporary setups can be carried out, such as Open Top Chambers to increase the temperature several degrees, structures to exclude rain, pollinators or predators.
  • Naturalized artificial pond for freshwater organisms.

Phytotrons

To host experiments with organisms that require controlled culture conditions.

Phytotron I. Space with two visitable cultivation chambers with precise control of temperature, photoperiod, radiation and humidity, and a work area.

Phytotron II. Room with vertical cultivation chambers, with temperature, photoperiod and humidity control. It also has space for aquariums and terrariums. And it has a material handling area, and refrigerators/freezers for sample storage.
