What will I learn by studying this degree?

Theoretical foundations of decision-making, financial accounting, model of the determination of public debt in an open economy, money, inflation, unemployment, growth and instruments of economic policy, basic business theory, national and international economic reality, productive sectors, public sectors , economic institutions and their development, basic legal legislation of civil rights institutions, mercantile laws, labor laws, and fiscal laws.

Instrumental knowledge: linear algebra, differential and integral calculus, statistics, econometrics, probability, simple and multivariable models of regression.

Where will I be qualified to work upon graduation?

With a Degree in Economics we are concerned with the training of professionals capable of developing their professional activity as much in the sphere of private business as in any kind of public organization. The graduate in Economics must be capable of determining the different economic problems that any economy shows and be able to offer possible solutions. Likewise, the graduate in Economics will be a professional capable of carrying out work in management, evaluation, and advising in the institutions or companies in which they work. Among these general functions one finds those of production, financing, investment, and accounting.

Objectives

  • 1. To respond to the necessities of existing training in economic matters, facilitating the knowledge of instruments useful for research or for decision-making, as much in the private as the public sectors.
  • 2. To offer a basic overall education in the area of ​​economics along with another, more advanced kind, which permits the specialization in areas in demand by institutions, as much public as private.
  • 3. To offer training that enables students to continue on to Masters programs at any national or international university.
  • 4. To offer essential material for the development of competitive advantages in the area of ​​economics, applicable as much in the professional sphere as in research and teaching.
  • 5. To create specific profiles of specialization in the different fields of economics in a way that the needs of business management, the management of collective aspects, and the economic management of resources are considered.
  • 6. To create the conditions for the development of multidisciplinary lines of research in what is called unconventional economics, which today are rapidly advancing in fields like the economics of the justice system, the economic analysis of politics, or the economics of healthcare, to cite only three examples. Apart from the previous, formative objectives, a common objective to all the degrees at URJC is to promote mobility, especially internationally.

As far as competence goes, graduates in Economics must be capable of carrying out good management of resources at any business or organization in which they develop their activity, as well as identifying the principle problems, among others. They must also be able to apply rational analysis and be able to choose from among different alternatives those that are most adequate for the objectives sought.

Graduates must be able to understand and draft reports on regional, national, or international economics, as well as analyze any sector of the economy by applying different economic instruments. Likewise, the graduate will acquire competence in evaluating the current and foreseeable situation with the information available, as much in the economic situation of a company as in the national economy. They must be able to draft economic reports about companies and markets.

The capabilities that we are going to list are based on results described in the White Book of Economics (ANECA). These abilities are derived taking into account opinions from the academic and professional worlds.

The generic or transversal competence makes reference to the attributes that a particular social group should have, in this case, the university graduates in Economics and they basically refer to organizational capacity and are related to the DEGREE IN ECONOMICS. Specific Professional Skills

Competence in these areas is what differentiates students with an Economics Degrees from university graduates as a whole, providing them with the necessary tools to be able to undertake their future work as economists. With regard to the basic, specific knowledge, it must be said that those that are considered most relevant are related to “macroeconomics” and “microeconomics,” “public funds,” “Spanish and world economy,” and “econometrics.”

It must not be forgotten that a general objective of the Rey Juan Carlos University is to promote international mobility, as much for students as for the professors and researchers who take part in its degrees.

 

Minimum requirements for stay

  • For full-time students doing an undergraduate degree, the maximum period of time allowed to complete the degree is eight years. Part-time students can request an extension of up to two years from the Rector.
  • In the degrees that have more than 240 credits (4 years), the maximum stated in the previous section will be increased by one year for each 60 ECTS that are added to the 240 ECTS.
  • Students have to pass a minimum of two subjects in the first year. Students who are studying part-time have to pass at least one subject in the first academic year.
  • Students who are studying an official degree at Rey Juan Carlos University have a maximum of four enrollments in each one of the subjects in the study program, without counting previous cancellations of said subjects.

Access

Access to official degrees requires holding a high school diploma or equivalent and passing the exam referred to in Article 42 of the Organic Law 6/2001 of Universities, modified in the Law 4/2007 (12 April), taking into account other mechanisms of access Foreseen in existing regulations.
The maximum number of 1st year students accepted in the academic is:

Internship Placement

The subject Internships is a curricular subject whose fundamental objective is to encourage the comprehensive training of the student through the practical application of the knowledge acquired in the degree, which facilitates direct contact with the professional activity and offers the opportunity for students to incorporate themselves in the professional world with a minimum level of experience. All the internships are designed so that students who participate in them acquire professional experience in real situations and conditions, applying the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that are acquired in the educational process during the degree. These internships are an important opportunity for the personal and professional development of the students.

The internships are activities that the students undertake in companies, institutions, and organizations; that is, in centers external to the university, and that have as their objective to enrich and complement their university studies, while also offering deeper knowledge related to the skills that will be needed once they graduate.  

The Internship subject has two phases:

  • First, doing the internship, which offers professional experience related to the profile of the graduate and that are shown in the Verification Report of the degree.
  • Second, preparation of the report.

Mobility Programs

ERASMUS

The Erasmus Program offers URJC undergraduate and graduate students the possibility of taking courses for one or more semesters at one of the European universities where URJC has agreements.

These exchanges traditionally involve financial assistance thanks to the Erasmus grants that the EU and the Spanish Education Ministry provide.

SICK

SICUE is a national mobility program for GRADOS university students that allows them to carry out part of their studies at another Spanish university with guarantees of academic recognition, use and adaptation to their curricular profile.

Student Support Programs

Orientation to future students. The University offers various orientation programs for future students: we carry out visits to high schools and secondary schools, we organize guided visits to the Campuses, we are present in the Classroom and, at the beginning of each course, we carry out welcome days to guide students new students.

academic tutorials. Each teacher carries out, within their teaching planning, academic tutorials on their subject.

Coordinator of the degree. It works to promote coherence and balance between the subjects and the workloads of the students.

mentoring program. The URJC has this program, peer tutoring, in which the students of the last years act as mentors with the first year students.

Students with disabilities. The Support Office for Persons with Disabilities offers guidance and assistance to students with special needs.

Scholarships . The Rey Juan Carlos University manages the main scholarships and annual grants, both its own and from other official bodies: Ministries, Community of Madrid, International Organizations and other entities. It also publishes and disseminates those scholarships and grants of interest to its students and graduates. Throughout the course, students receive information about them through the different communication channels established.

Job placement program. The Rey Juan Carlos University, through the External Internship Unit and the Graduates Office, organizes conferences, workshops and various actions aimed at supporting and guiding students in their job search, to improve their employability and promote job placement . The University has a Job Exchange -a platform available to companies and graduates- where institutions can carry out their selection processes.

Steps towards Improvement

The Quality Guarantee System at URJC establishes that the Quality Guarantee Commission of the degree analyzes the information derived from the different indicators of the degree and draws up a report which includes plans for improvement, if that is what the results so indicate.

Accreditation renewal

Accreditation renewal supposes the culmination of the implementation of the official undergraduate and Master's degrees registered in the University, Center, and Degree Register. The accreditation renewal of official undergraduate and Master's degrees is organized in three phases: self-assessment report, external visit, and final assessment.

In the first phase, the university describes and assesses the situation of the degree with respect to the established criteria and guidelines. The result is the Self-Assessment report that is presented. The second and third phases are carried out by a group of assessors who are external to the degree in question.

Recognition of quality

The Virtual Campus at URJC has the international  certification “UNIQUE” for quality in e-learning. UNIQUE is the most demanding seal of quality for the use of ICT in higher education.

In the framework of the celebration of the INNOVATION FORUM 2011 in the Portuguese town of Oeiras, the Foundation for the Quality of e-Learning gave three UNIQUe quality certifications to universities in Saudi Arabia, Russia, and Spain, and Rey Juan Carlos University was one of those chosen.

UNIQUe is the first certification of quality in all of Europe, created to offer support to universities in order to achieve excellence in the use of ICT for innovation in learning. The provides certification points of reference for the field of higher education in order to increase the speed of implementation of the Bologna reforms in the field of technology. It is centered on innovation with the aim of improving learning. At the same time, the UNIQUe seal facilitates the incorporation of the existing good practices and the valid strategies for quality, presenting a wide institutional focus that goes beyond e-learning in order to validate the efforts of the universities with regard to innovation.

This process of quality certification is based on the broad participation of the interested parties with the aim of involving the entire community of higher education, including the government, students and professors, as well as the administration and management of universities.
