The main objective of 'Science à la carte' is to promote knowledge and a scientific-technological vocation among young people in their first and second years of high school in the science modality, before taking the step to university education.

The activities scheduled for sixth edition of these conferences are held on March 13, 14 and 15 at the URJC Campus of Móstoles. The ESCET scientific community will show different areas of knowledge that are taught at the school and pre-university students will be able to see first-hand the work of scientists and their work spaces.

“Our objective with these activities is to introduce students who are close to deciding their professional future to different options within the field of science and to discover what can be done in research. We also want them to get to know the facilities of our university and a part of the teaching staff who will teach them if they study at the URJC”, says Pilar Martínez Hidalgo, coordinator of the conferences and deputy director of Communication, Promotion and Sustainable Development at ESCET.

The format of these conferences is designed to motivate and encourage the participation of young people. In this sense, students have the possibility of choosing 'à la carte' the activities that, due to their content, are more attractive and useful for their training.

Scientific experiences and challenges

During the three scheduled days, 19 dynamic and participatory activities will be carried out in which the knowledge of the attendees will be put to the test. Students will be able to participate in workshops, demonstrations, experiments, exhaust rooms and visits to the laboratories, to learn about different lines of research being developed at the URJC. “This year the proposals for activities are very varied and from all fields of knowledge of ESCET. The participating teachers have prepared entertaining and didactic activities that will consist of observing living beings in different environments and their uses, working on renewable energy or recycling, researching nanomaterials or learning about food from a different perspective, among others”, details the conference coordinator. .

'Science à la carte' is part of the calendar of events to promote scientific culture that the Office of the Vice President for Research, Innovation and Transfer carries out through the Scientific Culture and Innovation Unit (CCU+I). Carrying out these activities is possible thanks to the call for aid to promote the scientific, technological and innovation culture of the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) – Ministry of Science and Innovation. In addition, this initiative is part of the activities Researchers at Schools within the European Researchers' Night (MADRIDNIGHT) project, a consortium coordinated by the madri+dy Foundation funded by the European Union within the Horizon Europe Program, under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie actions (with grant agreement no. 101061343) .
