Sedentary lifestyle takes 52.000 lives a year in Spain

This is one of the conclusions of the 'Report on physical inactivity and sedentary lifestyle in the Spanish adult population' presented by the URJC Center for Sports Studies and the Fundación España Activa.

The study is the result of the first work carried out within the Active and Healthy Life Observatory of the URJC and has been carried out by researchers Xian Mayo, Fernando del Villar and Alfonso Jiménez.

Dr. Alfonso Jiménez, Scientific Director of the Fundación España Activa, pointed out the relevance of the report, given that it is a thermometer of sedentary lifestyle in Spain, and highlighted that "Physical inactivity is responsible for 13,4% of deaths at year in Spain, taking more than 52.000 lives a year, which represents more than 150 people a day." He also pointed out that "the economic repercussion of diseases caused by physical inactivity in our country, which represent a direct expense of more than 1.367 million euros per year".

The presentation ceremony was chaired by Dr. Jaime Lissavetzky, Director of the Center for Sports Studies of the URJC, who spoke to highlight the collaboration between both institutions for the development of research projects in Sports Sciences, which will allow giving empirical support to the new Degree in Physical Activity and Sports Sciences that the URJC offers in the 2017-2018 academic year.
