Presentation of two guides on Rights for people with health disabilities and social and political participation

Posted by Martha Albert

As a result of the "Disability: a matter of law" project, two rights guides for people with disabilities have been produced, an initiative that has been coordinated by Professor Marta Alberto and by the Esfera Foundation, represented by Mabel López.

Last December 3, coinciding with the On the World Day of Persons with Disabilities, the first two guides on rights in the field of health and social and political participation for people with intellectual disabilities were presented at the Manuel Becerra headquarters. This presentation has been the result of aproject that has been developed by teachers in the area of Law headed by Professor Marta Albert together with the Sphere Foundation, which works with people with intellectual disabilities. It had its origin in the Street law that was carried out last year. After that first experience, a need for training in rights was detected by people with Intellectual Disabilities, and it was also observed that the initiative had represented a really significant learning for the participating students, so they decided to present themselves to the call for human rights education projects of the Human Rights Office.

In this way, they obtained funding for this project, which has resulted in the development of two easy-to-read guides on the rights of people with ID, one on rights to social and political participation and another on rights in the field of health. Both have a common part of basic concepts, such as dignity or autonomy, the right to education and the problem of gender, and another part where the rights of each area are addressed. The illustrations are wonderful and show how the children have internalized the concepts they have learned.

Throughout the first semester of the current academic year, on Wednesdays the students of the Esfera Foundation have attended sessions at the Faculty of Legal and Social Sciences of the URJC. In these sessions, the students of the Law and Education degrees and those of the Master's in Bioethics at the University have acted as mentors, through inclusive and participatory processes, in learning about the rights of people with intellectual disabilities. The students who did Street Law last year, who led the first session, have also participated.

Every day a law was addressed, the students of the faculty from the "theory" and the students of the foundation from their life experience. Presentations, dynamics, group activities, it has been a very enriching experience at all levels and for all the participants, where many things have been done and all thanks to the enthusiasm and creativity of the students of both institutions.

Following the service learning methodology, it has literally taken the right to the street, and the best of all is that the participants in this initiative are seeing real changes.
