Law professors and students participate in the edition of the Help Guide in the framework of the COVID-19 crisis

Written by Beatriz Rodríguez Herráez

As a consequence of the pandemic caused by Covid19, many citizens are suffering economic problems, one of the most affected groups being people with intellectual or developmental disabilities. To try to help them, a guide has been published that presents the resources that can be accessed to reduce the consequences of the economic and social impact derived from the coronavirus health crisis.

The economic crisis caused by Covid-19 has begun and is expected to last for a long period of time, affecting a large part of Spanish society. As a consequence of this pandemic, many people have been affected in different ways, some have lost their jobs and others have suffered a decrease in their income. These difficulties affect a large number of citizens but are aggravated when those involved are vulnerable groups such as people with intellectual or developmental disabilities. Given the complexity expressed by some groups to understand the aid approved by the Government in the Royal Decree, the idea arose of creating a manual that would help to understand it and thus be able to have the same opportunities as other citizens.

One of the promoters of this initiative has been the professor of the area of Philosophy of Law at the URJC and director of the Master of Bioethics, Marta Albert, who has participated in the preparation of this guide written in an understandable language and that includes all the necessary information in a very visual way to be more accessible.

In the guide Law professors and students from the Faculty of Legal and Social Sciences of the URJC have participated and their main objective has been to obtain an easy-to-read text that explains how to request the different aid that exists for citizens due to the coronavirus crisis. It allows knowing the aid to which they are entitled and how to request it, including both where they should go to ask for it and the forms that should be used, as well as including contact telephone numbers for information. To facilitate the reading and understanding of the guide, it has been structured into six titles that include Health care, Social services and home care, Workers, Income Loans and the minimum vital income, Economic Aid for current expenses and Aid for LGBTI groups.

The text does not only include the aid offered by the Public Administrations, but also includes that of other organizations that are collaborating in reducing the serious economic and social consequences that the pandemic is causing in Spain.

The guide came about through a Citizen Participation initiative of the URJC Cooperation and Volunteering Service together with the collaboration of the Sphere Foundation.
