The Rey Juan Carlos University, together with the University of Alcalá de Henares, launched this Tuesday the new call for the awards Campus of International Excellence “Intelligent Energy”. This collaborative project of the two public universities, backed by the Universities of Murcia, Polytechnic of Cartagena and Extremadura, was born with the aim of giving visibility to work related to bioenergy and smart infrastructures.

Applications will be formalized through this telematics platform until July 1. Undergraduate, master's and doctoral students, as well as researchers from the URJC and UAH, can participate in the call. The awards of the prizes will also have an economic reward.

This year, the call establishes five different categories. It rewards the best scientific contribution (by means of an article, book or book chapter), Final Degree Project (TFG), Final Master's Project (TFM), doctoral thesis and patent. "The TFG, TFM and doctoral theses have been included in the awards with the aim of celebrating budding researchers, who are now starting their professional career", says Fernando García Muiña, Vice-rector for Innovation, Transfer and Relations with Companies of the URJC . "We want to encourage researchers, both present and future, from these first levels such as the degree, to see that their work is being recognized and rewarded."

The biggest novelty of this new call concerns this first category. Unlike previous years, scientific publications do not have to be co-authored by researchers from both universities. According to María del Mar Gómez Zamora, technician and researcher at the Center for Innovation, Technology and Knowledge Transfer (CINTTEC) of the URJC: “This call is more flexible than the previous ones. In this way, we facilitate access to the awards for those students and researchers who want to shed light on their projects, always rewarding the synergy between the two universities to a greater extent”.

Although the main objective is to give recognition and visibility to projects related to energy and smart infrastructure, it is closely related to the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). "Many of the advances that are developed in the field of energy have notable effects on environmental, social and economic sustainability," concludes Fernando García. These awards, therefore, are not only at the service of the researchers and students who present them, but also of the entire university community and society as a whole.
