Basic Information

What knowledge will I acquire with this Master?

The Master provides the student with extensive knowledge of contemporary Bioethics science, which can be grouped into three areas:

1.- Fundamental or general bioethics: The historical, philosophical, anthropological and ethical bases on which Bioethics is based, studying the human being in an integral way, as well as the various currents and models of argumentation and discussion in Bioethics. Subjects such as ANTHROPOLOGY, ETHICS OR FUNDAMENTALS OF BIOETHICS are framed in this area.

2.- Special or applied bioethics: We study in depth, from the different perspectives, and offer the essential scientific knowledge and analysis keys to address the most relevant issues of the current bioethical discussion, both the bioethical problems related to the beginning of human life. (Statute of prenatal human life, assisted reproduction techniques, research with embryos, stem cells, genome editing, etc.); such as those related to the end of human life (Determination of death; Organ transplantation, Limitation of therapeutic effort, Euthanasia, Living will, Palliative care, etc.), passing through those that arise in the so-called clinical Bioethics (Relationship doctor-patient, patient rights, informed consent, bioethics committees, bioethics of STDs, mental illness, etc.). We also address training related to legal issues related to Bioethics and environmental bioethics. This area includes subjects such as BIOETHICS and BEGINNING OF LIFE; BIOETHICS AND END OF LIFE; CLINICAL BIOETHICS, BIOETHICS and LAW; BIOETHICS and ENVIRONMENT. 

3.- Research in Bioethics: The Master also teaches research in Bioethics, offering knowledge of Research Methodology, and the proper management of resources, sources and specific skills for research in bioethical science. According to the preferential interests of the student, a personal tutor guides him in his research in one of the following Research Lines: RESEARCH LINE IN BIOETHICS AND HUMANITIES; RESEARCH LINE IN BIOETHICS AND HEALTH SCIENCES; RESEARCH LINE IN BIOETHICS AND THE ENVIRONMENT

Recommended income profile

Students who have possession of an official Spanish university degree or another issued by a higher education institution of the European Higher Education Area that authorizes access to Master's degrees in the country that issued the degree.

Bioethics is a multidisciplinary science. Although a bachelor's degree in the area of ​​Humanities or Health Sciences is recommended, other degrees such as Economics and Business, Engineering... that make up human knowledge are not excluded.

Objectives

  • Offer postgraduate training in Bioethics accessible to students who come from different areas of knowledge and wish to specialize in this subject.
  • Offer the student an objective and interdisciplinary knowledge of Bioethics that allows him to be trained to enter the professional world linked to Bioethics.
  • Offer the student basic training (providing them with the necessary tools and strategies) to be able to carry out research work in Bioethics.

Competences

Basic skills:

  • CB6 - Possess and understand knowledge that provides a basis or opportunity to be original in the development and/or application of ideas, often in a research context
  • CB7 - That students know how to apply the knowledge acquired and their ability to solve problems in new or little-known environments within broader (or multidisciplinary) contexts related to their area of ​​study
  • CB8 - That students are able to integrate knowledge and face the complexity of formulating judgments based on information that, being incomplete or limited, includes reflections on the social and ethical responsibilities linked to the application of their knowledge and judgments
  • CB9 - That students know how to communicate their conclusions and the knowledge and ultimate reasons that support them to specialized and non-specialized audiences in a clear and unambiguous way
  • CB10 - That students have the learning skills that allow them to continue studying in a way that will be largely self-directed or autonomous.

General Competencies:

  • CG01 - Demonstrate knowledge and understanding according to their training, and overcome and improve them so that they provide a basis or an opportunity for originality in the development and/or application of ideas, in the context of Research in Bioethics.
  • CG02 - Be able to apply their knowledge and understanding, as well as their abilities to solve problems, in new or unfamiliar environments and in broad (multidisciplinary) contexts related to the field of Bioethics.
  • CG03 - Have the ability to integrate knowledge, to face complexity and to formulate judgments based on incomplete or limited information, but which includes reflections on the social and ethical responsibilities linked to the application of their knowledge and judgments.
  • CG04 - Being able to communicate their conclusions, and the knowledge and conceptual framework on which they are based, both to expert and non-expert audiences, clearly and without ambiguity.
  • CG05 - Develop learning skills that allow them to continue their studies in a largely self-directed or autonomous way.

Specific Competences:

  • CE01 - Lay the philosophical and anthropological foundations to address bioethical problems.
  • CE02 - Acquire sufficient knowledge of basic science to understand bioethical problems.
  • CE03 - Know and reflect on existing national, international and supranational legislation on Bioethics.
  • CE04 - Offer the possibility of a certain specialization through electives within the broad field of knowledge of Bioethics in three areas (Health Sciences, Environment and Humanities).
  • CE05 - That the student can develop a supervised research project that contributes new knowledge in Bioethics.

Transversal Competences:

  • CT01 - Identify the bioethical problems that arise from a conduct, situation or application, in the biotechnological field, in the health care activity and in basic clinical and scientific research.
  • CT02 - Relate a bioethical or biolegal argumentation with the philosophical, anthropological and ethical thought that gives it its foundation.
  • CT03 - Analyze the bioethical dimension of practical cases, real or fictitious, applying the criteria, argumentation models and methodology of the various currents of Bioethics
  • CT04 - Analyze the biolegal dimension of practical cases, real or fictitious, applying the criteria, argumentation models and methodology of the various currents of Biolegal.

Admission and enrollment

Admission:

The requirements for access to the proposed title are according to article 18, of Royal Decree 822/2021, of September 28:

  1. Possession of an official Spanish Graduate or Graduate university degree or equivalent is a condition for accessing a Master's Degree, or, where appropriate, having another University Master's degree, or titles of the same level as the Spanish Bachelor's or Master's degree issued by universities and higher education institutions in an EHEA country that in that country allow access to Master's degrees.
  2. In the same way, people in possession of titles from educational systems that are not part of the EHEA, which are equivalent to a Bachelor's degree, will be able to access a Master's Degree in the Spanish university system, without the need for homologation of the title, but verification by of the university of the level of training that they imply, as long as in the country where said title was issued it allows access to university postgraduate level studies. In no case will access through this route imply the homologation of the previous degree held by the person concerned or its recognition for other purposes than that of carrying out the Master's degree.

Offer of places: 30 places. If the minimum number of students envisaged is not reached in a course, the University may choose not to open the teaching group.

Mobility programs

University Master's degrees, due to their duration and characteristics, in general do not specifically contemplate the mobility of their students. However, the Rey Juan Carlos University has different mobility programs for both students and University workers (PDI and PAS) and has procedures for collecting and analyzing information on these mobility programs. The Quality Assurance System of the Rey Juan Carlos University establishes that the degree's Quality Assurance Commission will annually analyze the information derived from the degree's indicators and prepare a report that will include improvement plans if the results so indicate. 

Renewal of accreditation

The renewal of the accreditation represents the culmination of the implementation process of the official Bachelor's and Master's degrees registered in the Register of Universities, Centers and Degrees (RUCT). The renewal of the accreditation of official bachelor's and master's degrees is organized in three phases: self-assessment report, external visit and final assessment.

In the first phase, the university describes and assesses the status of the degree with respect to the established criteria and guidelines. The result is the Self-Assessment Report (IA) that is presented. The second and third phases are carried out by a group of evaluators external to the evaluated title.”
