Basic Information

What knowledge will I acquire with this Degree?

As a graduate in Translation and Interpreting, I will have acquired the following knowledge:

  • I will master translation and interpreting techniques and strategies
  • I will master language A (Spanish), language B (English) and language C (German/Arabic) (in all types of written and oral discourses and registers) and their respective cultures to translate and interpret (consecutively and simultaneously) .
  • I will be able to effectively apply liaison interpreting and note-taking techniques and carry out sight translation tasks.
  • I will master computer tools applied to translation/interpretation and localization and will be able to carry out computer-assisted translations.
  • I will master the documentation techniques applied to translation, as well as the terminology and lexicography necessary to carry out specialized translations,
  • I will know the translation and interpretation job market and I will have acquired the necessary professional skills to practice my profession both autonomously and as a salaried employee, following quality standards.
  • I will be able to design and organize translation and interpreting projects and to work in interdisciplinary teams, in national and international contexts.
  • I will know how to adopt an ethical commitment in the exercise of the profession, and to develop critical reasoning, recognizing the value of diversity and interculturality for translation and interpreting.

I will know how to apply editing, layout and textual revision techniques

Where will I be able to work when I graduate?

The degree in Translation and Interpreting will enable me to work in very broad work contexts, above all related to multilingual communication: as a translator or interpreter in the private sector, with the possibility of working as a freelancer. In this case, translators usually take the MAEC sworn translator exam, which is held annually. I can also work as an employee, in national and international organizations, as well as in hospitals, embassies and companies of
export / import and services. I will also be trained to carry out my work in emerging fields such as video game localization or translation. Other areas in which this profession is valued are in the media (either written press or audiovisual media), publishing houses, where translators are highly valued as editors, as well as tourism. With this degree I will also have the opportunity to teach at different training stages.

Is this Degree official according to the regulations required by the European Higher Education Area?

What subject areas will I address in this grade?

In the Translation and Interpretation degree I will learn to translate legal, technical, literary and bio-health texts. I will also acquire competencies to carry out audiovisual translation and simultaneous and consecutive interpretation. I will learn to translate web pages and proofread and edit texts.

Recommended Income Profile

It is recommended that the Translation and Interpreting student, given the interdisciplinary nature of this area of ​​knowledge and its applicability in the most diverse fields of knowledge, have the following characteristics:

  • Interest in intercultural and interpersonal communication
  • Training in any of the basic branches and general culture
  • Knowledge of a foreign language of a sufficient level to achieve the translation objectives
  • Mastery of the Spanish language in all its aspects
  • Capacity for analysis, critical reasoning and common sense
  • Predisposition to use new technologies

Objectives 

The fundamental objective of the degree is to train future multilingual communication professionals with integrated knowledge in areas related to translation and interpreting studies. This will allow them to carry out quality translations and interpretations in different registers and in diverse thematic fields and to adapt efficiently to a complex labor context, due to the rapid evolution of the economic, social and cultural sectors that demand highly qualified professionals. It will also allow them to lead and participate in interdisciplinary work teams and undertake editing and translation projects at a national and international level.

Minimum stay requirements 

  • The permanence of the students in the Degree studies will be a maximum of eight years for full-time students. Part-time students may request an extension of up to two more years from the Rector.
  • In Bachelor's degrees lasting more than 240 credits (4 years), the maximum of the previous section will be increased by one more year for every 60 ECTS credits that are added to the 240 ECTS.
  • Students must pass a minimum of two subjects in the first year. Students studying part-time must pass at least one subject in their first academic year.
  • Students who are studying any official Bachelor's degree at the Rey Juan Carlos University may make a maximum of four registrations to pass each of the subjects of the study plan, without counting previous cancellations of the same.

External Internships

The External Practices subject is a curricular subject whose main objective is to promote a comprehensive training of the student through the practical application of the knowledge acquired during the Degree, which facilitates direct contact with the professional activity and the opportunity to join the professional world with a minimum of experience. All practices are designed so that the students who participate in them acquire professional experience in real situations and conditions, applying the knowledge, skills and attitudes that are acquired in the training processes throughout the degree. The internships represent a decisive opportunity for the personal development and professional future of the students.

Internships are activities carried out by the student in companies, institutions and organizations; that is, in centers outside the university premises, which aim to enrich and complement your university education, while providing you with a deeper knowledge about the skills you will need once you have graduated.

The External Practices subject will consist of two phases:

      • Completion of the internship period that offers professional experience related to any of the graduate profiles that are expressed in the Verification Report of the degree.

Orientation to future students. The University offers various orientation programs for future students: we carry out visits to high schools and secondary schools, we organize guided visits to the Campuses, we are present in the Classroom and, at the beginning of each course, we carry out welcome days to guide students new students.

academic tutorials. Each teacher carries out, within their teaching planning, academic tutorials on their subject.

Coordinator of the degree. It works to promote coherence and balance between the subjects and the workloads of the students.

Improvement actions

The Quality Assurance System of the Rey Juan Carlos University establishes that the degree's Quality Assurance Commission will annually analyze the information derived from the degree's indicators and prepare a report that will include improvement plans if the results so indicate.

Renewal of accreditation

The renewal of the accreditation represents the culmination of the implementation process of the official Bachelor's and Master's degrees registered in the Register of Universities, Centers and Degrees (RUCT). The renewal of the accreditation of official bachelor's and master's degrees is organized in three phases: self-assessment report, external visit and final assessment.

In the first phase, the university describes and assesses the status of the degree with respect to the established criteria and guidelines. The result is the Self-Assessment Report (IA) that is presented. The second and third phases are carried out by a group of evaluators external to the evaluated title.”
