Professor Mª Jesús Abad jury in the prestigious Velázquez Prize

Written by Beatriz Rodríguez Herráez

The Velázquez Prize 2020 has counted as a member of the jury with Professor María Jesús Abad, appointed by Women in the Visual Arts and who has presented two candidacies.

Professor María Jesús Abad, professor of the Fine Arts degree, has been named a member of the jury of the Velázquez Prize for Plastic Arts 2020, which is recognized as the most prestigious in our country. The selection is made among professionals of recognized prestige.

The Velázquez prize was created in 2002 by the Spanish Ministry of Culture and is the equivalent of the Cervantes prizes for literature in the field of arts. The idea was to award prizes to the most outstanding national and Latin American artists. Among the winners are Antonio López or Luis Gordillo.

In this prize, the candidatures are presented by the members of the jury, the artistic associations, the Royal Academy of Fine Arts or the museums of Contemporary Art, and the artists cannot present themselves voluntarily. There is an obligation that when the prize is awarded, the artist must be alive.

This year the award is endowed with 100.000 euros and María Jesús Abad is nominated by Women in Visual Arts (MAV) and presents two candidates. Last Monday, November 23, it was announced that the winner of this edition was the artist Soledad Sevilla.
