What knowledge will I acquire with this Master?

El Master's Degree in Film Screenplay and TV Series of the Rey Juan Carlos University is an official postgraduate course with a professional and creative orientation, aimed at training future scriptwriters and producers of stories in the Spanish and international audiovisual fiction market.

Count with one expert faculty in dramatic writing and fiction production for film and television. They are all leading industry professionals and prestigious academics who will work with students to develop their skills as writers, analysts and producers of stories.

The academic program of the Master is divided into two semesters: TV and Film. The sessions and practical workshops of each block are aimed at two specific objectives: the proposal and development of a fictional television series and a feature film script, through the mechanics of work groups.

Each student will professional practices in production companies and audiovisual companies as part of the training itinerary. In addition to the specific agreements of the Master itself, the Rey Juan Carlos University has internship agreements with more than 60 entities of the film and television industry.

Recommended income profile

Students who have possession of an official Spanish university degree or another issued by a higher education institution of the European Higher Education Area that authorizes access to Master's degrees in the country that issued the degree.

The Master's Degree in Screenwriting and Television Series is especially aimed at graduates in Fine Arts, Audiovisual Communication, Film and TV, Integral Design and Image Management, and other degrees related to narration and audiovisual and literary creation. A medium knowledge of English as a reading comprehension, cultural curiosity and an interest in the arts are among the recommended skills of the entry profile.

Objectives

The Master aims to train professionals and experts in writing, production and management of film and television scripts. The study plan provides content, skills and specialized skills in the approach and development of dramatic and documentary texts, understood as production projects aimed at the Spanish and international audiovisual market.

For this reason, the training itinerary of the Master has a base of theoretical subjects grouped in the Module I: Script principles (24 ECTS). In turn, the plan offers two blocks of a professional-creative nature consisting of the Module II: TV fiction series project (12 ECTS), and for the Module III: Feature film script project (12 ECTS). The subject plan is oriented towards Television during the first semester and Cinema during the second.

Through the Module IV: External Practices (6 ECTS), each student will carry out professional internships in companies in the audiovisual sector with which the Master or URJC has formalized an agreement. Finally, the Module V: Final Degree Project (6 ECTS) completes the training itinerary. The feature film script project carried out during Module III will be evaluated individually, according to the assessments of the tutor and a commission of professionals.

  • CE03 - Skill in planning, imagination and design of dramatic premises, corresponding to the previous phases of the writing process. Aptitude for the approach, development and writing of scenes and other units of dramatic action, according to the cinematographic and television script formats.

  • CE05 - Mastery of a double creative and analytical perspective of script writing, which enables the student in the tasks of production and construction of audiovisual stories.
  • CE06 - Rhetorical skills for the presentation and discussion of script projects in a professional context.
  • CE07 - Ability to place the film and television script in relation to the other phases of the production process.
  • CE08 - Ability to place the script within a specific industrial context and audiovisual market, in order to assume the commercial conditioning factors of a specific story or series.
  • CE09 - Promotion of skills and aptitudes necessary for the completion of the proposed projects, especially those related to order, planning and responsibility in the tasks of the creative process.
  • CE10 - Development of imaginative and technical skills through the development of creative writing practices.
  • CE11 - Know the ethical and legal context in which writing and production tasks take place.
  • CE13 - Knowledge of the creative and narrative resources of visual language and its iconographic potential
  • CE12 - Ability to join and adapt to a professional team, making their own particular interests compatible and even synergistic with those of the collective project in which they have joined.

Admission and enrollment

Admission:

The requirements for access to the proposed title are according to article 18, of Royal Decree 822/2021, of September 28:

  1. Possession of an official Spanish Graduate or Graduate university degree or equivalent is a condition for accessing a Master's Degree, or, where appropriate, having another University Master's degree, or titles of the same level as the Spanish Bachelor's or Master's degree issued by universities and higher education institutions in an EHEA country that in that country allow access to Master's degrees.
  2. In the same way, people in possession of titles from educational systems that are not part of the EHEA, which are equivalent to a Bachelor's degree, will be able to access a Master's Degree in the Spanish university system, without the need for homologation of the title, but verification by of the university of the level of training that they imply, as long as in the country where said title was issued it allows access to university postgraduate level studies. In no case will access through this route imply the homologation of the previous degree held by the person concerned or its recognition for other purposes than that of carrying out the Master's degree.

The Rey Juan Carlos University does not have specific admission regulations, but is governed by article 16 of Royal Decree 1393/2007, modified by Royal Decree 861/2010, of July 2. Each title has its own general access criteria and special access tests.

Admission to the Master's Degrees will be carried out through a selection process; in some cases, that process may involve a selection test. The Direction of the Master will communicate to the interested parties what the selection test will consist of, as well as the exact date and place of its realization through this application and by means of an email notice.

Enrollment of new students in the Master's Degrees of the Rey Juan Carlos University is done, through the Internet, in a single enrollment period during the month of July, on the dates established and published in the University website.

In the case of vacant places in the University Master's degrees offered in the pre-registration of the ordinary term of July, a second extraordinary registration period is opened, after the corresponding pre-registration period, on the dates established in the month of September.

Selection of applicants:

Where appropriate, if necessary, the applicant's academic record will be assessed, as well as their curriculum vitae, based on their professional experience and their projection in relation to the objectives of the Master's Degree. Likewise, the condition of being a graduate of the Rey Juan Carlos University will be taken into account.

Non-Spanish-speaking foreign students who have completed their entrance studies in non-Spanish-speaking countries must prove their knowledge of the Spanish language by providing an official certificate equivalent to level C1.    

In the event that the demand exceeds the supply of places, an assessment of the applications will be made in accordance with the following admission criteria and weighting percentages:

  • Academic record: 50%
  • Professional experience according to the profile of the Master: 40%
  • Any activity, merit or recognition that allows assessing said professional experience: 10%

Offer of places: 24 places. If the minimum number of students envisaged is not reached in a course, the University may choose not to open the teaching group.

External Internships

External internships are only offered for students of plan 6271 (enrolled for the first time before the 2024-2025 academic year)

The External Practices subject is a curricular subject whose main objective is to promote a comprehensive training of the student through the practical application of the knowledge acquired during the Master's degree, which facilitates direct contact with the professional activity and the opportunity to join the professional world with a minimum of experience. All practices are designed so that the students who participate in them acquire professional experience in real situations and conditions, applying the knowledge, skills and attitudes that are acquired in the training processes throughout the degree. The internships represent a decisive opportunity for the personal development and professional future of the students.

Internships are activities carried out by the student in companies, institutions and organizations; that is, in centers outside the university premises, which aim to enrich and complement their university education, while providing them with a deeper knowledge about the skills they will need in the future.

The External Practices subject will consist of two phases.

First. Completion of the internship period that offers professional experience related to any of the profiles that are expressed in the Verification Report of the degree.

Mobility programs

University Master's degrees, due to their duration and characteristics, in general do not specifically contemplate the mobility of their students. The Quality Assurance System of the Rey Juan Carlos University establishes that the degree's Quality Assurance Commission will annually analyze the information derived from the degree's indicators and prepare a report that will include improvement plans if the results so indicate.

Renewal of accreditation

The renewal of the accreditation represents the culmination of the implementation process of the official Bachelor's and Master's degrees registered in the Register of Universities, Centers and Degrees (RUCT). The renewal of the accreditation of official bachelor's and master's degrees is organized in three phases: self-assessment report, external visit and final assessment.

In the first phase, the university describes and assesses the status of the degree with respect to the established criteria and guidelines. The result is the Self-Assessment Report (IA) that is presented. The second and third phases are carried out by a group of evaluators external to the evaluated title.”
