This proposed Master seeks the acquisition of knowledge and analytical and professional skills specialized in economic information. It aims to cover the need for specialists in economic information, derived from the proliferation of communication media interested in this field (economic newspapers, business magazines, thematic radio and TV channels), as well as the greater weight of economic information in traditional media and of the need for companies to have internal and external communication teams. Internships in companies will allow applying the knowledge acquired.

Recommended income profile

Students who have possession of an official Spanish university degree or another issued by a higher education institution of the European Higher Education Area that authorizes access to Master's degrees in the country that issued the degree.

Recommended requirements:

The preferred entry profiles for this master's degree will be Graduates in higher studies in Journalism, Economics or Business (Journalism, Communication, Economics or Business Graduates, Diplomas in Business Administration and Management, Economics Degree, Journalism Degree, etc.).

Architects, engineers or graduates from other areas who prove basic knowledge of Economics and/or Journalism, as well as professionals with proven experience in the world of journalistic information, can also access the Master's Degree, as long as they hold an official university degree. Spanish or another issued by a higher education institution of the European Higher Education Area.

Objectives

The Master's Degree in Economic Journalism pursues the training of qualified professionals in the field of economic journalism, for which it is necessary to emphasize the multidisciplinary nature of this profession, which requires mastery of terminology and economic models, as well as the communication tools in different media (written or audiovisual).

This degree seeks the acquisition of knowledge and analytical and professional skills specialized in economic information. General skills

  • The student will know how to apply the knowledge acquired about the world of economic journalism and their ability to solve problems in new or little-known environments within broader (or multidisciplinary) contexts related to social, economic, legal, technical and management aspects. .
  • The student will be able to integrate knowledge and face the complexity of formulating judgments based on information that, being incomplete or limited, includes reflections on the social and ethical responsibilities linked to the application of their knowledge and judgments.
  • The student will know and respect Human Rights, democratic principles, the principles of equality between women and men, solidarity, environmental protection, equal opportunities, non-discrimination and universal accessibility for people with disabilities and promotion of culture of peace and democratic values.
  • The student will have acquired the ability to communicate their conclusions -and the knowledge and ultimate reasons that support them- to specialized and non-specialized audiences in a clear and unambiguous way.
  • The learner will have acquired the learning skills that enable them to continue studying in a way that will be largely self-directed or autonomous
  • The student will have the ability to perform tasks within a multidisciplinary team in the context of Journalism. Integrate and communicate with experts from other areas and in different contexts.
  • The student will be able to present a project, defend it publicly, argue the preparation of the associated budget and present improvements or innovations added to the initial project.

The skills that students who pass the Master must achieve are the following:

  • The student will be able to carry out an analysis of the economic environment, understanding as such an analysis of macromagnitudes and conjunctural phenomena, review of the main statistical sources, interpretation of economic information and analysis of the conjunctural evolution of the Spanish economy.
  • The student will be able to carry out an analysis of the intervention of the State in the economy, which includes examining the main variables and indicators on the dimension of public intervention, understanding the different justificatory theories of the role of the State in the Economy, analyzing the main public policies , its objectives and its limitations and understand the instruments of economic policy.
  • The student will know the main indicators and statistical methods used in economic analysis, will be able to analyze the information presented in tables and graphs as well as the measures of centrality and dispersion of variables. The student will know the statistical methods to estimate relationships between variables and will understand the information on dependence or independence between economic variables.
  • The student will acquire the ability to write economic news and present information for both a general and specialized audience and to recognize the basic principles of economic information.
  • The student will be able to synthesize economic information with clarity and knowledge. And he will be able to write economic news in different formats, written press, radio and television.
  • The student will be able to apply ethical and deontological principles to the preparation and dissemination of economic information
  • The student will be able to carry out an analysis of the economic structure of the markets, for which he will know how to interpret the main economic variables related to the analysis of the economic structure of a market and/or a country, he will handle the usual economic tools that will allow him to reach a global understanding of the functioning of the markets and will have acquired a reflexive and critical capacity that allows them to understand the economic dimension of the environment in which they operate.
  • The student will have the ability to analyze the processes of economic integration and globalization (They will understand the economic forces that drive the integration process. They will assess the future perspectives of the economic integration process in Europe and other continents. They will know the institutional decision-making process in the European Union and other examples of economic integration).
  • The student will know how to manage the different techniques of corporate communication (They will manage business communication, valuing it as a strategic policy and will evaluate the Social Responsibility of a corporation. They will understand the context in which corporate communication is developed).

Admission and enrollment

Admission:

The requirements for access to the proposed title are according to article 18, of Royal Decree 822/2021, of September 28:

  1. Possession of an official Spanish Graduate or Graduate university degree or equivalent is a condition for accessing a Master's Degree, or, where appropriate, having another University Master's degree, or titles of the same level as the Spanish Bachelor's or Master's degree issued by universities and higher education institutions in an EHEA country that in that country allow access to Master's degrees.
  2. In the same way, people in possession of titles from educational systems that are not part of the EHEA, which are equivalent to a Bachelor's degree, will be able to access a Master's Degree in the Spanish university system, without the need for homologation of the title, but verification by of the university of the level of training that they imply, as long as in the country where said title was issued it allows access to university postgraduate level studies. In no case will access through this route imply the homologation of the previous degree held by the person concerned or its recognition for other purposes than that of carrying out the Master's degree.
  1. Candidate selection:

    There are no special entrance exams, instead, a detailed examination of the applicants' CVs is carried out. Once the pre-registration period is over, a selection will be made among the students who meet all the requirements.

    The body responsible for the admission process is the Director of the Degree.

    Offer of places: 15 seats. If the minimum number of students envisaged is not reached in a course, the University may choose not to open the teaching group.

External Internships

The External Practices subject is a curricular subject whose main objective is to promote a comprehensive training of the student through the practical application of the knowledge acquired during the master's degree, which facilitates direct contact with the professional activity and the opportunity to join the professional world with a minimum of experience. All practices are designed so that the students who participate in them acquire professional experience in real situations and conditions, applying the knowledge, skills and attitudes that are acquired in the training processes throughout the degree. The internships represent a decisive opportunity for the personal development and professional future of the students.

Internships are activities carried out by the student in companies, institutions and organizations; that is, in centers outside the university premises, which aim to enrich and complement your university education, while providing you with a deeper knowledge about the skills you will need once you have graduated.

The External Practices subject will consist of two phases:

  • Completion of the internship period that offers professional experience related to any of the graduate profiles that are expressed in the Verification Report of the degree.

The Quality Assurance System of the Rey Juan Carlos University establishes that the degree's Quality Assurance Commission will annually analyze the information derived from the degree's indicators and prepare a report that will include improvement plans if the results so indicate.

Renewal of accreditation

The renewal of the accreditation represents the culmination of the implementation process of the official Bachelor's and Master's degrees registered in the Register of Universities, Centers and Degrees (RUCT). The renewal of the accreditation of official bachelor's and master's degrees is organized in three phases: self-assessment report, external visit and final assessment.

In the first phase, the university describes and assesses the status of the degree with respect to the established criteria and guidelines. The result is the Self-Assessment Report (IA) that is presented. The second and third phases are carried out by a group of evaluators external to the evaluated title.”
