Basic Information

What knowledge will I acquire with this Master?

The aim is to offer students the keys to understanding and analysis necessary to rigorously study a complex phenomenon such as terrorism, which has gained special relevance after the events of September 11 in the United States and other terrorist attacks such as those that occurred on March 11, 2004. in Madrid and on July 7 in London.

The Master is aimed at professionals in the field of security in order to promote the acquisition of knowledge at a specialized level on the sociopolitical field of the terrorist phenomenon. The aim is also to deepen the knowledge and qualification of the professionals of the State Security Forces and Bodies, as well as that of the professionals of Intelligence and National Defense, of the Administration of Justice or of Foreign Action. of the State. The Master is also intended for professionals specialized in these issues within civil society, as well as students interested in acquiring substantive knowledge about the phenomena of political violence and terrorism.

Recommended income profile

Students who have possession of an official Spanish university degree or another issued by a higher education institution of the European Higher Education Area that authorizes access to Master's degrees in the country that issued the degree.

Objectives

The study plan is designed with the aim of favoring the student's acquisition of knowledge at a specialized level on the socio-political sphere of the phenomenon of terrorism and security. The structure of the study plan seeks to improve the student's capacity for organization, planning and analysis of sources related to the subject matter of the course. The combination of theoretical and practical contents of the different subjects seeks to perfect the capacities for developing critical reasoning around the subject matter of the course. In this way, an attempt will be made to strengthen interpersonal and group work skills, as well as the development of relevant skills in order to assimilate and incorporate the learning acquired in the field of analysis and prevention of terrorism.

The teachings of this Master are structured following a design whose objective is that by completing this title the student has acquired extensive knowledge and analytical skills in the following areas:

  • The history of terrorism and the origin of terrorist organizations as well as their dynamics of action.
  • The profile of militants of terrorist groups and the importance of psychosocial variables in the analysis of terrorism.
  • The characteristics of the main anti-terrorist measures adopted by democratic governments and the difficulties that their implementation entails, including the underlying problems of international cooperation.
  • Legislative reforms and the involvement of international organizations in the fight against terrorism.
  • The role of civil society and the collective action of victims against terrorism.
  • The constitutional limits that exist in terms of anti-terrorist legislation.
  • The role of the Armed Forces in the fight against terrorism, the definition of the main terrorist threats to national security and the responses to them.
  • The design of public policies against terrorism and the comparison of various anti-terrorist models.
  • The differences between the anti-terrorist models that are designed and applied in democratic and non-democratic contexts.
  • The objectives and functions of national and international political and legal institutions in the fight against terrorism, as well as the different strategies against this phenomenon developed from various fields.

  • CE4. Acquisition of a critical awareness in the analysis of the political system and the legal system and of the actors involved in the preparation of public policies against terrorism and in their application.
  • CE5. Become aware of the role of jurisprudence in our legal system, from a perspective compared to other political and legal systems.

Admission and enrollment

Admission:

The requirements for access to the proposed title are according to article 18, of Royal Decree 822/2021, of September 28:

  1. Possession of an official Spanish Graduate or Graduate university degree or equivalent is a condition for accessing a Master's Degree, or, where appropriate, having another University Master's degree, or titles of the same level as the Spanish Bachelor's or Master's degree issued by universities and higher education institutions in an EHEA country that in that country allow access to Master's degrees.
  2. In the same way, people in possession of titles from educational systems that are not part of the EHEA, which are equivalent to a Bachelor's degree, will be able to access a Master's Degree in the Spanish university system, without the need for homologation of the title, but verification by of the university of the level of training that they imply, as long as in the country where said title was issued it allows access to university postgraduate level studies. In no case will access through this route imply the homologation of the previous degree held by the person concerned or its recognition for other purposes than that of carrying out the Master's degree.

If necessary, the student's curriculum will be assessed, based on their professional experience, their projection in relation to the objectives of the master's degree, as well as their academic record.

External Internships

The External Practices subject is a curricular subject whose main objective is to promote a comprehensive training of the student through the practical application of the knowledge acquired during the Master's degree, which facilitates direct contact with the professional activity and the opportunity to join the professional world with a minimum of experience. All practices are designed so that the students who participate in them acquire professional experience in real situations and conditions, applying the knowledge, skills and attitudes that are acquired in the training processes throughout the degree. The internships represent a decisive opportunity for the personal development and professional future of the students.

Internships are activities carried out by the student in companies, institutions and organizations; that is, in centers outside the university premises, which aim to enrich and complement their university education, while providing them with a deeper knowledge about the skills they will need in the future.

The External Practices subject will consist of two phases.

First. Completion of the internship period that offers professional experience related to any of the profiles that are expressed in the Verification Report of the degree.

Renewal of accreditation

The renewal of the accreditation represents the culmination of the implementation process of the official Bachelor's and Master's degrees registered in the Register of Universities, Centers and Degrees (RUCT). The renewal of the accreditation of official bachelor's and master's degrees is organized in three phases: self-assessment report, external visit and final assessment.

In the first phase, the university describes and assesses the status of the degree with respect to the established criteria and guidelines. The result is the Self-Assessment Report (IA) that is presented. The second and third phases are carried out by a group of evaluators external to the evaluated title.”
