What knowledge will I acquire with this Master?

Deepening and research on communicative practices and their impact on society as a whole and, especially, on the most vulnerable sectors, such as immigrants, minors, women's groups or social movements, is proposed. Professionally prepare students to face the changing social reality with adequate and specialized knowledge and skills in this area.

Recommended income profile

Students who have possession of an official Spanish university degree or another issued by a higher education institution that authorizes access to Master's degrees in the country that issued the degree. In both cases, the degree must come from the area of ​​Communication, such as Journalism, Audiovisual Communication, Advertising and Public Relations, Cinema, etc.

Objectives

The Master's Degree in Communication and Sociocultural Problems has as its general objective the acquisition of analytical and methodological knowledge and skills in that part of the domain of communication whose main references are sociocultural problems (social exclusion, gender, social movements, globalization, development , risk and catastrophes, immigration, cyberculture, child protection, social advertising, youth, cultural diversity, among others).
In particular, it is about acquiring analytical and methodological knowledge and skills in the areas that have to do with:

  • The methodology of social research and the methodology of communication research
  • The investigation of the main sociocultural problems through the media.

BASIC AND GENERAL COMPETENCES

BASICS

  • CB6 - Possess and understand knowledge that provides a basis or opportunity to be original in the development and/or application of ideas, often in a research context

  • CE01 - Being able to systematically understand and identify a sociocultural problem, from a communicative perspective, in order to develop a research proposal.
  • CE02 - Be able to apply the most appropriate qualitative and/or quantitative research methods and techniques that are commonly used to investigate sociocultural problems.
  • CE03 - Train to conceive, design and put into practice a research process, also leading to the completion of their master's thesis.
  • CE04 - Being able to follow and measure the relevance or focus that the media have on the main sociocultural problems.
  • CE05 - Being able to apply pertinent research evaluation procedures in relation to a habitual object of study from a social and communicative perspective.
  • CE06 - Be able to identify social expectations and needs, in a media environment, and for practical purposes, involving its relevant actors.

Admission and enrollment

Admission:

The requirements for access to the proposed title are according to article 18, of Royal Decree 822/2021, of September 28:

  1. Possession of an official Spanish Graduate or Graduate university degree or equivalent is a condition for accessing a Master's Degree, or, where appropriate, having another University Master's degree, or titles of the same level as the Spanish Bachelor's or Master's degree issued by universities and higher education institutions in an EHEA country that in that country allow access to Master's degrees.
  2. In the same way, people in possession of titles from educational systems that are not part of the EHEA, which are equivalent to a Bachelor's degree, will be able to access a Master's Degree in the Spanish university system, without the need for homologation of the title, but verification by of the university of the level of training that they imply, as long as in the country where said title was issued it allows access to university postgraduate level studies. In no case will access through this route imply the homologation of the previous degree held by the person concerned or its recognition for other purposes than that of carrying out the Master's degree.

Candidate selection:

To enter this Degree you must have obtained a Bachelor's degree in the field of Social Sciences and Humanities. Access is done as follows:

  • Degrees in the field of knowledge of communication, journalism and advertising and public relations (Degree in Cinema and Audiovisual Media, Degree in Cinema and Television, Degree in Communication, Degree in Audiovisual Communication, Degree in Digital Communication, Degree in Marketing, Degree in Journalism, Degree in Protocol, Degree in Organization of Events and Corporate Communication, Degree in Advertising and Public Relations and other similar). Direct access. 
  • Degrees in the field of knowledge of Education Sciences. Access through training supplements. 
  • Degrees in the field of knowledge of social sciences, social work, labor relations and international relations. Access through training supplements. 
  • Degrees in the field of knowledge of gender studies and feminist studies. Access through training supplements. 
  • Degrees in the field of knowledge of Philology, classical studies, translation and linguistics. Access through training supplements. 
  • Degrees in the field of interdisciplinary knowledge. Access through training supplements. 

The selection of applicants, It is carried out by the Head of the Master. must be presentedcurriculum with the specific profile required, taking into account their professional experience, their projection in relation to the objectives of the master's degree, as well as their academic record.

In general terms, in the event that demand exceeds supply, the following criteria will be applied:

·       Assessment of the student's curriculum: 50%
Assessment from a level test: 50%

The test is carried out only in the case in which the demand exceeds the places offered. 

 

Regarding the assessment of the curriculum, the academic record (60%), the professional experience linked to the orientation of the master's degree (20%) and the complementary training activities that are connected to the subject of the degree (20%) will be taken into account. .

Offer of places: 50 places. If the minimum number of students envisaged is not reached in a course, the University may choose not to open the teaching group.

All students in the field of Communication must not take training supplements:

  • Degrees in the field of knowledge of communication, journalism and advertising and public relations (Degree in Cinema and Audiovisual Media, Degree in Cinema and Television, Degree in Communication, Degree in Audiovisual Communication, Degree in Digital Communication, Degree in Marketing, Degree in Journalism, Degree in Protocol, Degree in Organization of Events and Corporate Communication, Degree in Advertising and Public Relations and other similar). The rest of the degrees must take the Training Complements (3 subjects):

External Internships

The External Practices subject is a curricular subject whose main objective is to promote a comprehensive training of the student through the practical application of the knowledge acquired during the master's degree, which facilitates direct contact with the professional activity and the opportunity to join the professional world with a minimum of experience. All practices are designed so that the students who participate in them acquire professional experience in real situations and conditions, applying the knowledge, skills and attitudes that are acquired in the training processes throughout the degree. The internships represent a decisive opportunity for the personal development and professional future of the students.

Internships are activities carried out by the student in companies, institutions and organizations; that is, in centers outside the university premises, which aim to enrich and complement your university education, while providing you with a deeper knowledge about the skills you will need once you have graduated.

The External Practices subject will consist of two phases:

  • Completion of the internship period that offers professional experience related to any of the graduate profiles that are expressed in the Verification Report of the degree.

Renewal of accreditation

The renewal of the accreditation represents the culmination of the implementation process of the official Bachelor's and Master's degrees registered in the Register of Universities, Centers and Degrees (RUCT). The renewal of the accreditation of official bachelor's and master's degrees is organized in three phases: self-assessment report, external visit and final assessment.

In the first phase, the university describes and assesses the status of the degree with respect to the established criteria and guidelines.
